A form object in MS Access provides a convenient method for entering, editing, and displaying records. Forms allow you to view data one record at a time, in a more attractive format than Datasheet view for tables and queries.

Forms can be created using fields from either a table or a query. The data that is added to the form will be added to the table or query that the form is based on, and vice versa

Like tables and queries, forms can be opened in two views: Form view, which displays actual data, and Design view, which you use to create or modify the structure of the form. In Design view, you can customize your forms by adding or removing fields, changing the background color or pattern, or selecting from several form layouts.

In Access, tables are built from fields and records. Similarly, the building block of the form is the control. Controls are more flexible than the fields and records that make up tables. They can contain data, perform an action, or enhance the design of the form by adding graphic elements such as lines or rectangles.

Different kinds of Controls in a form

A label box is a control you use to display text that a user can't edit directly.

A text box is used to display information entered at design time, by a user at run-time, or assigned within code.

Check boxes provide a way to make choices from a list of potential candidates. Some, all, or none of the choices in a group may be selected.

Option buttons provide the capability to make a mutually exclusive choice among a group of potential candidate choices. Hence, option buttons work as a group, only one of which can have a True (or selected) value.

Option group provide a way of grouping related controls on a form.

A list box displays a list of items from which the user can select one or more items. If the number of items exceeds the number that can be displayed, a scroll bar is automatically added.

The combo box is similar to the list box. The differences are a combo box includes a text box on top of a list box and only allows selection of one item.

The line tool creates simple straight line segments of various width and color. Together with the shape tool discussed next, you can use this tool to 'dress up' your application.

The shape tool can create circles, ovals, squares, rectangles, and rounded squares and rectangles. Colors can be used and various fill patterns are available.

An image box is very similar to a picture box in that it allows you to place graphics information on a form. Image boxes are more suited for static situations - that is, cases where no modifications will be done to the displayed graphics.

The easiest way to create a form based on the table or query that you select is to use AutoForm. Although AutoForm creates forms quickly, this technique does not give you a lot of control over the content or appearance of the form.

AutoForm creates a form with controls for all the fields from the table that the form is based on, so you do not have a chance to select fields individually. However, after you create a form using AutoForm, you can modify and enhance the form in Design view.

AutoForm offers three layouts for your form: columnar, tabular, and datasheet.

In columnar layout, only one record can be viewed at a time. Text boxes and their associated labels appear side by side in two columns. The labels appear to the left of each text box and identify the data in the text box.

In tabular layout, labels appear across the top of the form, and the values for each field appear in columns below the labels. In tabular layout, more than one record can be displayed at a time.

Datasheet layout displays records in columns and rows, so the form looks similar to tables displayed in Datasheet view. Some of the form enhancements available with columnar and tabular layouts cannot be used in datasheet layout.

Link Popularity and Link Directories

Many ponder the question of how to get one way links pointing to their site, well one way to do this is by placing your links on web directories. In the technological world of websites, search engines and web directories have a long-standing relationship. Search engines look at directories and place a high value on them because they are human edited.

One link from a directory is counted as a back link and hence increases your link popularity. Before placing your link on a directory make sure the directory ranks well and is SEO friendly, which means that is optimized for each category this will increase the value of your posted link.

To start pulling in traffic a great strategy to use is to place links on web directories, this will build the one way links that you need. Posting links on web directories draws website users. Placing links on directories is a good strategy but if you are placing the links buy purchasing them it can become expensive.

Using reciprocal link exchange is a great strategy but should not be the only strategy you use, search engines give some weight to reciprocal link exchanges but one way links are looked upon as more important, try to have a diversified strategy when building you link campaign, don’t stick to one method.

There are many benefits associated with gaining free traffic from web directories. An economical way of building traffic is to place your links on free web directories. Basically web-hosting directories are of two types: paid WHDs and free WHDs.

You need to figure out if you should pay for a link on a web directory or not, a good rule of thumb is if the directory does not have higher than a 4 page rank don’t pay if the page rank is higher than a 4 then pay. The options are many and stem from two main categories: free directories and paid directories. Placing links on web directories is sometimes free and sometimes you need to pay for the links, usually the pay for directories are those directories that have a high page rank.

There are many free directories to submit your links to; dmoz.org and freelinkdirectories.net. If you haven’t submitted your website(s) to this directory you must do so. Make sure you follow the guidelines when submitting to dmoz.org. The other free directories you can find by going to the search engines and doing a search under free link directories, once you have the list start submitting your site(s). Make sure you don’t reciprocate the link because this defeats the purpose of the one way link.

There are software programs that can help submit to these directories, the plus side to using the software is that they update them regularly with new directories and the list of directories is at your finger tips. So better create many links as you can

A. Software Requirements

To create an application that uses Visual Basic 6 and MySQL. You need to download and install the MySQL Community Edition, MySQL Query Browser and MyODBC 5.1 driver. When you install the MySQL Community Edition, make sure that you take note of the username and password you have provided.

B. Create the Database

Use mysql query browser to create a new database and table.

Create a database named, "dblog" and a table named, "tblog" that with the following fields and their datatypes and length values: id(int, 10), name(varchar, 50) and password (varchar, 10).

C. Create the Interface
Create the interface using Visual Basic 6 using labels, textboxes, command button and datagrid.
When adding datagrid and adodc recordset, enable the Microsoft Datagrid Control and Microsoft ADODC Control by clicking Project in the menu bar then Components. In the components dialog box under control tab, look and enable the Miscrosoft Datagrid Control and Microsoft ADODC control.

The degree Fahrenheit (°F) is a unit of temperature named for the German physicist Gabriel Fahrenheit (1686 - 1736). The degree Celsius (°C) is a unit of temperature named for the Swedish astronomer Anders Celsius (1701-1744) who first proposed it. Since there are one hundred steps between these two reference points the original term for this system was Centigrade (100 parts).

Installing a new hard drive

You bought a new hard drive and you want to install it, what you should do?
 If you have bought a new hard drive for a desktop, it is either an IDE or SATA.  The diference is that in an IDE, there is jumper on the hard drive, you need to change it’s setting either as master or slave.  An IDE  hard drives configured as master will be the primary boot disk. However this is not needed when installing SATA hard drives.
 It is not important if its IDE or SATA hard drive, the process of installing it is completely the same.  You will get some cables that are used to connect the hard drive to your motherboard,  secure a safe place in your tower for the new drive.  Also avoid touching other cables, circuits and panels in your computer tower. First connect data cable and after that you can connect the power.
 Watch when installing because hard drives are really sensitive piece of hardware.
 After that you should turn on computer and enter BIOS immediately to check if it recognizes the  hard drive, sometimes it recognizes it automatically, some times you need to change some options in order to make BIOS know the component is there.
 Now you should know that drives are low formatted when you get them, so you should do “high level format” before using it.  You could just boot for example XP and go to “my computer” to find a new hard drive located in that folder.  Then select the new drive, right click on it, go to tools and select Format.  It will ask you to choose the file system and you should choose NTFS system, click start after that and be patient.  This operation can last long, especially with large capacity drives, but leave computer working until this operation is finished.
 Once it is completed you can reboot your personal computer and then find the new hard drive.  Adding a new hard drive may change letters for other drives, so don’t be confused with it.   This is what needs to be done, but you can never know what can go wrong with computers.
 If your computer’s system still uses FAT32 you may have problems with bigger capacity drives like 120Gb drive or a larger, the system sometimes can’t recognize them. Service Pack 2 could solve this problem, or you can update your BIOS if you have some really old motherboard. You can also turn off your computer, check cables again just to make sure everything is connected as it should be. After that reboot, go to BIOS to see if the device is recognized now, you may even need the boot disk for your system or you can download it too, it is needed to format this new drive before it can be installed as a slave drive of your original master drive.
  If this does not help try calling some computer repair service, or computer repair on site service that can look at the problem and fix it in no time.  You can try to fix problem yourself but it is always advised to contact some help and support and see what is the best thing to do when a problem occurs.

Computer Use in the Home

The researchers of California State University examined social interactions of children using home computers. The main concern was whether computers tended to isolate youthful users. Adult anxiety regarding the damaging effects of computers on children was assessed. Parental involvement, orientation to computers, and gender were the main independent variables.

A case study approach was employed to gather observational data regarding the variety of interactional networks that framed the computer experience of 32 participants.

The findings challenged the notion that heavy computer users experience social isolation. It was found that the interpersonal lives and computer activities of children reflexively amplified each other and that boys were more likely to socialize in relation to computers than were girls.

The findings were explained as consequences of context and gender-based differentiated styles of world-creating activity. Recommendations were made to parents and teachers encouraging a less apprehensive and more integrative/developmental view of the social effects of children’s computer use.

Projectors are one of the best inventions in the field of multimedia. This new technology is able to zoom in an image and project it towards a flat surface so that more people can view the illustration with ease.  It has greatly helped businesses in presentations, meetings and analyses.

Projectors are utilized for disseminating information or giving entertainment at a larger base.  Projectors make the job of educators, students, businessmen and others  who need an effective method of presenting important information easier and clearer.

Projectors make home viewing more entertaining since viewing is always better in a larger screen. People find the idea of having a home theater particularly relaxing and convenient.

There are two different types of projectors - the LCD and the DLP.   LCD stands for Liquid Crystal Display while DLP stands for Digital Light Processing.    LCD projectors provide vibrant colors and sharp images compared to the DLP variety because it has a higher lumens output.   On the other hand, DLP projectors are handier.  All projectors that weigh three pounds or less are DLP projectors.

The decision to select a DLP projector or a LCD projector depends on what activities the projector will be used for.  Powerpoint presentations are better with LCD projectors. The DLP projector offers the best quality output for moving images like movies or audiovisual presentations. The size and weight of the unit should also be considered. This means that if the job needs constant relocating, then the handier DLP will be the logical choice.

There are differences to the quality of output of different models because models have different specifications and capacities.

Projectors with the highest Lumens can offer the brightest and clearest images.   Appropriate for trade shows, conventions and conferences are projectors with 6000 Lumens.   This type of projector is understandably pricier and heavier as compared to models with lower Lumens.   Most people use projectors with 2000 Lumens, an entry level projector.  The best projector, naturally, will depend on the use the buyer intends to put it into.

In buying a projector there are a few things that should be considered. Each type or model of projector has its own characteristic in terms of functionality, output and price. When ligthning strikes

Imagine this:

You are working in your home rushing a report on a cloudy night to be submitted the next day, when suddenly a lightning strikes. Simultaneously your computer went blank.

or

You come home from your extended trip to find that your house has been struck by lightning. 

Minimal damage has happened to the structure, but you go inside and find that many of your electronic items, including a 3-year-old TV and a $1500 computer have been totally destroyed by the seemingly minor lightning hit!

What happened? You had all these electronics turned off and plugged into surge protectors, why did they get damaged so badly?

This is an actual account from a resident who went for a month to visit the kids and grandkids. When they returned, they found all of the damage to their electronic equipment throughout the house. Luckily, they had good insurance and the items were replaced.

I also experienced this event twice, one in our school (a year old, slightly used computer) and another in our house.  A computer technician tested which parts were not working.  The power supply, hard drive, keyboard and mouse are functional.  The DDR2 memory module still work.  However, the motherboard, 15-inch LCD monitor and CD-ROM drive weren't functioning.  

But getting a new computer is not like getting a new TV, where you take the TV out of the box and plug it into the wall and turn it on. It takes a lot of time to set up a new computer and reconfigure the software as well as take the backed up data and restore it to the new computer. I made a good amount of money that day but learned a great lesson that I will pass on to you.

First of all, if you have important data on your computer, back it up. If you don’t know how to do it, find a good technician or at least a friend who knows how to help you. Backing up data just means that you make a copy of the information that you work with on a regular basis on your computer, whether it is pictures or financial information or a book that you are writing … whatever is important to you, needs to have a copy that resides off of the computer.  This client found out the hard way just how important it is to create these backup data discs, and was very grateful that she did! Programs that run on your machine can be replaced, but the data that you create with the program cannot be replaced, unless you have a copy of it!

Secondly, when you leave the house for any length of time and there is a chance that a thunderstorm will arrive near your building, you must shut down your computer and any electronic devices … if you want them to survive the storm.  And, to absolutely play it safe, even if your devices are plugged into a surge protector and they are shut off … unplug the surge protector from the wall socket and the connection from the phoneline if your computer is connected to the internet.

That little act will save you from tons of costly grief! During thunderstorm season in the spring and summer, I shut off and unplug every computer that we have running at the office, as well as any other important electronic item that I don’t want damaged.

These new added conveniences made the GPS even more demanding amongst the average consumer. Now the GPS is used all around the world by just about everyone as a means of finding the right direction to where you are going.

When it comes time to find a GPS that suits you, make sure that you check out all the electronic stores in your area so that you can play around with it before you buy it because they do all vary. You'll find that some give you the traffic and will find you restaurants while others just tell you where to go. The only thing that I recommend when it comes to a GPS is that you never be cheap with the device because you'll get what you pay for when you buy one at a discounted right. If you buy a no name brand or one that looks cheap, you're going to install it and have a hard time using it.

I have a GPS and I love it. I would recommend one that's easy to use and can be programmed rather easily. If you have to type in fifty things to get it working, I would move onto another one. Make sure you get one that talks and can show you where local restaurants are. If you can get one like this, you're going to find that they are a lot easier to use than most of them out there. There are literally hundreds, so do your homework one day and see which one will fit you and your car.

But what is a netbook?

Netbooks usually have screens of 10 inches or less, runs Windows or Linux and generally sell for well under $500. As its name indicates, the netbook's main purpose is to keep its owner conveniently connected to the net - anywhere, anytime.

First introduced by Asustek when it launched the first Eee PC in the fall of 2007. But it was only in the last year when we saw the explosive growth of these so-called mini-laptops. Now we have many computer companies such as HP, Dell, Lenovo... all jumping on this craze for a small portable laptop. So much so, that netbooks now is the fastest growing segment of the laptop industry and is expected to reach 139 million units by 2013.

Why is there a sudden popularity for the small netbook? Perhaps the answer lies mainly in our constant quest for mobility. We want a portable device that will keep us connected to the Internet and yet be small and light enough to be carried around all day. A truly ultra-portable device that keeps us connected with family, friends and the web.

The next question you have to ask: why do netbooks make for great student laptops? If the above reasons aren't enough, try the following:

Size

Netbooks are small with 10 inch displays or less, which make them ideal for students. Plus, they are usually very lightweight - around 2 or 3 pounds. They are compact enough to tuck into your school bag or backpack, and small enough to carry around all day without developing a hernia.

Portability

As mentioned above because the netbook is so small and compact, it is very portable. A very mobile device that we can use to stay connected to the web and friends. Connectability is one of the main features - you are connected to the web at all times.

Sturdiness

Most netbooks are designed to be sturdy and tough. They can take a few hard knocks and still keep on working. Students are not exactly the most gentle creatures on the planet, so a sturdy tough machine is needed to handle the demands put upon it.

Battery Life

Because of their small size, you will usually get better battery life than with a regular sized laptop. This is important to the student since you may have to go all day without a chance to re-charge the battery. Long lasting battery life makes the netbook the perfect student laptop.

Performance

Perhaps, the main reason netbooks make the perfect student laptops is the low price. Students are usually on a very limited budget and the low price-tag is a perfect fit. Many perfectly adequate machines are now priced in the $300 to $500 range - while many good ones go for well under $300. Plus, prices are steadily dropping so almost any student can now afford a netbook.

Connections

What kind of connections does your mini laptop possess. Most still have  LAN connections using RJ45 or high quality Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) connections such as

Effective Presenting With Microsoft Powerpoint

You may want to customize a slide show for a particular audience. Rather than randomly hiding slides for a particular audience you could create three different versions of a presentation inside the same file. One may contain slides suitable for your clients; other custom view might contain slides suitable for new starters and a third senior management. The core presentation might be the same but displaying different levels of detail and nuance to suit. 

Don’t forget to add visual effects for moving from one slide to another. You may want to create a transition effect as your presentation moves from one slide to another. As well as transition effects between slides you may want to add either standard or custom animation effects on the slide. Imagine you were an oil company and wanted to show each of your new rigs flying in from different directions in a predefined sequence.

Why not consider adding action buttons to the slide that can be invoked during the presentation.

You could add links to graphics on your slides to add links to another slide, slide show, or Web page. Other links might be made to Excel spreadsheets, Visio drawings or Word documents

You must pack up a presentation to run on another computer. A presenter should take good care if they are displaying the presentation on a remote site to ensure that they copy not just the PowerPoint file but all the linked files and fonts that make up the finished products. If need be you can also copy and bring with you a PowerPoint viewer just in case the machine you are running your presentation on does not have a copy of PowerPoint installed.

Beware of Networks and unpredictable Internet Connections. In general it’s good advice to disconnect from the Internet. While you are presenting, there is no requirement to have a network connection you can copy all the files you require to a local directory. Similarly unless you intend to show to show a website or disconnect network cables and disable wireless connectivity. Don’t take a chance on your computer deciding to download software updates, display unexpected instant message, or alerting you to the arrival of a new email.

Know your venue. If your venue is offering light pens, dimming options on lighting and a wireless Mouse check then all work and rehearse how to use them. Better still make sure that you have the number of the support person if it all goes wrong. Have a plan B. If the projector bulb blows have paper copies or transparencies at hand.


Cleaning Windows Xp: Getting Started

You can do quite a bit to clean the average Windows XP system. Files proliferate, programs fall out of favor, viruses reproduce, e-mail clusters, and pop-ups populate. Throw in a little system neglect and before you know it, you have a messed-up system that badly needs cleaning.

Cleaning a Windows system is more about behavior than it is about one or two tasks. Granted, you need to do some remedial work to get your system back in peak condition, but once you do, keeping your system clean on an ongoing basis is much easier than doing the remedial work in the first place.

Essential tasks

In general, you should work on the most accessible parts of the system first and then move on to the rest. Following is a list of essential tasks to do even if you're really pressed for time.

* If you have only limited time available, get rid of unused and unneeded files. Archive your old-but-still-valuable files to get them off your system. When you have more time, you can go back and deal with your programs and your system as a whole. (Generally you should get your programs under control before worrying about your data, but the key here is time restriction. Working on programs simply takes longer than does taming your data.)

* If you have more time available, do a program inventory and remove the programs you no longer need. You'd be amazed at how much clutter this can remove from your system. Then go back and clean up your data and archive your older information.

* Get rid of spyware and spam and get your Internet environment under control. If you do this, you find that using the Internet can again become productive, rather than frustrating.

* Closely examine what your computer loads without your knowledge. This is one of the key places many people overlook (even when suggesting ways to clean your computer), but Windows encounters instructions to automatically load different programs from a myriad of places (most on the Web). These programs can hog resources and slow down your system's overall performance.

Of course, tracking down such unseen scoundrels can take a bit of time. When you have that time (and after you've done the other things in this list), jump in and try to figure out what's going on. Windows provides some utilities that can help, such as the System Configuration Utility (msconfig).

* If you really have some extra time, you can wade into the murky waters of the Windows Registry. The Registry is the centralized database that controls virtually everything that happens in the operating system. It is mind-numbingly complex and staggeringly obtuse for normal humans to deal with. However, you can do things in the Registry that you cannot do in any other way.

Working in the Registry is not for the faint of heart. Make sure you double-check every action before you take it. One wrong step and you can bring your system to its knees.

Precautions for safety's sake

Cleaning a Windows system necessarily involves moving things, adding things, deleting things, and sometimes renaming things. Any of these tasks, while necessary, can have unintended consequences. Heaven forbid you should delete a critical system file or wipe out the wrong data key in the Registry.

These precautions help you avoid the bad things:

* Don't delete files without knowing what you are deleting. If you're in doubt, simply move the file to a different directory or rename it. Then, if you restart your system (or the program) and find out you made a mistake, you can always move the file back or restore its original name.

* Make periodic backups of your system. If you're getting ready to do a huge cleaning session, you might want to make a backup right before you start. If you want to rely on an older backup, you might want to have it close by, in case you need it when you start your cleaning session.

* Be careful how you delete programs. In the wonderful days of DOS, in the misty past, programs usually consisted of a couple of files or all the files in a given directory. Not so in Windows. When you install a program, the installation program can move pieces and parts all over the place. When you run the program, it can move more of itself to still other places. Because of that, the best way to delete a program is to use either the uninstaller provided with the software or the Add/Remove Programs applet in the Control Panel. Don't just delete the main folder for the program — pieces and parts will remain scattered everywhere.)

* Know what you are doing with the Registry. The Registry is a largely incomprehensible place. Be careful when you are changing or deleting things in the Registry. In fact, you should create a backup of the Registry before you do any big changes, or simply export a data key when you are getting ready to make more minor changes. (A data key is geekspeak for a branch in the Registry.) Windows does not have a Recycle Bin for the Registry — if you delete something by mistake, you will be glad you made a copy ahead of time.

* If a new icon shows up on your desktop one day, don't double-click it. If you don't know why it's there, someone (or some program) has possibly deposited it there. If you don't know what it does, why double-click it and run it? A safer course of action is to right-click the icon, choose Properties, and then examine what programs the icon runs.

* Keep your original program discs accessible. If you change the a program's installation, you probably need the discs. If you delete a part of the program you shouldn't, you probably need the discs. If you want to reinstall the program, you probably need the discs. Just keep them close. And it wouldn't hurt to have any necessary software keys (those pesky ten-character — or longer — codes required to install or unlock your software) for the discs, either.

* Use only programs from reputable sources. There are lots of programs you can use to help with your system cleaning. You can download most of these programs from the Internet. However, some of the software you find on the Internet may not have been tested and can be reliable. Replacing your video card

Has your computer's video card died or do you just want to upgrade it to a newer, faster card? well, if you are lost when it comes to the inside of a computer, then here is an easy step by step installation guide just for you!
First things first. Determine whether you are going to use an AGP or PCI card.  PCI slots are the most common in the PC now, and most newer computers have one AGP slot on the motherboard, which has a locking hinge on it, while the PCI slot(s) are usually brown and all look alike. Look at the video card you have in your computer now .. Hint: it will have the monitor cord plugged into it. If there is a little lock handle at the end of the slot, it's an AGP card, otherwise the slot is for a PCI video card.  If you have an AGP slot, buy that kind of card if possible.
Pull 'er out!  Well, before doing that, notice the screw that is holding the card onto the computers frame.  Remove this, then gently rock the card out of the slot.  Try to not touch anything other than the cards edges. Static electricity from your hands can damage the card's circuitry.  IF you are removing an AGP card, be sure to pull the lock out before attempting to remove the card. Otherwise, you may pull out the card along with the motherboard and anything else attached!
Put 'er in! Now you can put in the new card in the reverse manner that you took the old one out with.  Gently tho ... you don't want to damage your motherboard by pushing too hard.  once it is inserted completely, anchor it securely down with the screw you took out previously. Caution  If the card does not fit into the slot,make sure it is facing in the right direction.  If you are sure it is right, check that the card matches the slots cutouts. An AGP card will not fit into a PCI slot, so make sure you have the right slot for the card.
At this point you should have a working new video card with impressive new video display.  If not, Check that the video cable is securely attached to the video card. Also, check that the video card is completely seated in the computer motherboard's slot. One other problem you may have is that the monitor itself may be too old to support the new video card.
